1. Have a professional perform a safety inspection and performance tune-up every year on your air conditioning and heating system. This will increase its efficiency, verify all safety features, improve your air quality and prevent untimely breakdowns.

2. Change the air filters in your heating system as recommended by the manufacturer or as needed by the conditions of your home.

3. Install a programmable thermostat which will allow you to set back the temperature in your home when you are gone or sleeping. It is recommended that you set your thermostat back at least 8 degrees for at least an 8 hour period to gain maximum efficiency. Doing this can result in an annual energy savings of up to 8%.

4. For peace of mind, install and test all carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors in your home. The key areas of placement are the utility room and bedroom areas.

5. Make sure all exterior sump pump hoses drain away from the foundation of your home, preventing the ‘recycling’ of water through the sump system.

6. Replace standard incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). They provide high-quality light output, use less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs, saving money on energy bills and replacement costs.
